Sheep’s milk is now being sold at Union Square farmers’ market. The farmer is Karen Weinberg of 3-Corner Field Farm.
This has come about because I asked Karen if she would sell me sheep’s milk. I had just found out that I have an allergy to cow’s milk. The doctor told me I could tolerate goat’s milk and sheep milk more easily. While I love goat cheese, I don’t like the taste of goat’s milk in my coffee or on my oatmeal. It doesn’t really work in my favorite cake recipe.
At first, Karen was surprised by my query. She did set aside some milk for me when she made batches of cheese. (Her cheese is wonderful.) Coincidentally, others began asking her for milk. Last Saturday, she showed me her first bottled milk--it’s official.
Sheep’s milk is sweeter than goat’s milk and not at all gamey. I now like it better than cow’s milk. It is richer.
Karen also sells top-quality lamb. The stew I made with lamb neck was exceptional. The Morroccan-style lamb sausage is delicious.

Karen Weinberg won't be at the farmer's market at Union Square until June. Until then, you could try Murray's Cheese on Bleecker Street for her yogurt (excellent!) and possibly the sheep's milk.

Thanks for a great tip. It was intriguing enough that I gave them a call. Karen was very gracious and helpful on the phone. She mentioned the possibility that they'd sell the milk at Murray's, but that didn't seem to be a done deal so I didn't mention it here.

BTW ChowNews readers got this tip in the issue of 3/24, which carried the following item (thanks to Connie):

SHEEP'S MILK AT THE GREENMARKET

Got sheep's milk? Didn't think so.

But now you can pick up a bottle from Three-Corner Field Farm (http://www.dairysheepfarm.com) at the Union Square Greenmarket. Sheep's milk is rich, sweeter than goat's milk, and not at all gamy, reports *Connie Crothers*. Recommended for any hounds allergic to cow's milk - or just eager to broaden their lactic horizons.

Three-Corner Field Farm, which is upstate in Washington County, also sells cheese, yogurt, and lamb, including delicious Moroccan-style sausage. Note that after Wednesday, March 29, they'll be absent from the market until June, when they'll return on Saturdays.
