I don't know a lot about sturgeon, but reading this post was eerie. I'm visiting New York for a few days. This morning I went to a place called Ess-a-Bagel (which I've always enjoyed) on 53rd and 3rd and got a sturgeon sandwich. While it was quite tasty, the reason I bring it up is the unusual fellow who makes the sandwiches rambled something about someone from Barney Greengrass getting his sturgeon there (or something like that). I had no idea (and have no idea) what Barney Greengrass is.

Barney Greengrass is an Upper West Side restaurant, on Amsterdam Av. at 86th St., where you can get excellent appetizing, as well as the usual deli meats, sandwiches, etc.

I am a Russ and Daughters fan--just ask for a tasting before they start to carve.
Suggestion--ask for the smoked sea bass--that is the best smoked fish ever.›2 Replies-

re: guttergourmet
Murray's Sturgeon Shop, 2429 Broadway near 89th St.,
212-724-2650, has excellent sturgeon, beautifully sliced, at astronomical prices.
The best buy is sturgeon tails at Zabar's. Ask at the far left of the smoked fish counter. There's a fair amount of waste, but the price is an incredible bargain and the quality is excellent.
