A couple of ideas, all Brooklyn based

Eagle Provisions has a large, esoteric selection (5th ave and 20th). I've purhcased beer from Kenya there.

Bierkraft has a large, EXPENSIVE selection, mostly impressively domestic.

Thrify Beverage on Court may have some selections dusty and in the back.

There's a place in Astoria people like, I've never been.

Call the last two and ask before going.
Good luck,
Anu

Thanks for all the suggestions! I went to Eagle Provisions in Brooklyn and was absolutely amazed by the selection. That's my new place for beer. I wound up getting Tusker beer from Kenya, which was one of two African beers that they carry. Given that I was aiming for Zambian beer, which seems very difficult to find, I was happy to find Tusker (which is a light beer and goes well with spicy food).

I'm not aware of any beers imported from southern Africa (which doesn't mean there are none out there). You might try posting on beeradvocate.com or ratebeer.com. Both have many knowledgeable members. You'll have to register (free) to post.
