Big thread on this quite recently on the Manhattan board - search for "pulled pork."

Short answer, there *is* no wonderful pork barbecue in NYC but there are some acceptable places that will do in a pinch. Favorites seem to be Daisy May & Pearson's, with a few votes for Virgil's and Blue Smoke.

Just wait another month or two. Dinosaur BBQ says that they will be opening their restaurant in NYC (by the 125th St. Fairway) at the end of September, beginning of October. It's our one great hope for good NC BBQ.

My southern husband and I very much enjoyed our meal last week at the newly opened Texas Smokehouse BBQ on Second Ave. and 25th Street (we are talking about New York City, right?). Very flavory & lean ribs, delicious collards. Inexpensive and decently portioned, too. Give it a whirl.

I would have to disagree about TX Smokehouse on 2d.
It's some of the worst BBQ I've ever had, and this includes Dallas BBQ, and the bygone McRib sandwich. I find it suspect that a Chowhound could enjoy this joint... ???

Dasisy May's on the otherhand, while not the best I've EVER had, is close, and among the all-time tops; and certainly the best in NYC. Better than RUB for sure, and Virigl's, TN Mtn., Brother Jimmy's, etc. by far.

Only problem with Daisy's is, it's only open M-F to 8:00pm (and no collards or lemonade), but they cater, deliver, have carts, etc. I would recommend the dry pork, and sticky pork ribs.

If you need a 'real' BBQ fix, this is the place in NYC. I'm not really in it for the sides (though I do enjoy collards), it's the ribs that count for me, and I prefer the St. Louis cut. I can't comment a lot on the sides at DM's but they looked just fine, and were okay, but not memorable.

With respect to it being a National class contender, I think they need just a little more work on their smoking technique, which is still excellent and evident; on the contrary most places that claim to smoke around here show no evidence of having smoked the meat, at all!

Tried recently to get barbecue takeout from Daisy Mae's--but it seems they do everything possible to avoid you getting anything from their "big pig" menu. It's not enough to order two days in advance; you need three or four days if you want your pickup on the weekend, and pickup isn't until 8:00 pm.

I also tried to order from Pig 'n Out in Brooklyn. After being promised delivery at a specific time and date, I was then left high and dry as "nothing was available" until three hours after my arranged pickup time.

Thankfully, RUB Barbecue came through. The whole butt was a big hit at the picnic, tender, spicy and sweet. The brisket, burnt ends and pastrami were only OK, but the sides were all good, led by the addictive onion strings.
