Nathan, I don't know where to find Mate, but if you walk in to the numerous Argentine restaurants in Manhattan or Queens and ask them, perhaps they can tell you which local market carries it!

i would recommend buying it in corona, queens. (i think around corona ave./91st st.) there are a couple of butcher shops and a c-town grocery store that carry many brands of mate: rosamonte, nobleza gaucha, santa cruz, taragui, etc. they sell it in the kilo bags you get in argentina. much cheaper, i am sure, than any place you will find in manhattan.

There are two places in Jackson Heights that are easy to get to and have yerba mate & accessories pretty cheap. Take the 7 Train to the 82nd St - Jackson Hts stop. Nice neighborhood.

La Nueva Bakeria @ 86-10A 37th Avenue at 86th St (I think - isn't that the ways Queens addresses work?) 718 507 2339
Really good selection of mate here, including Union, Tarragui, Rosamonte, Cruz de Malta and several others with orange, lemon and apple available as well. It's really reasonable here - I got a kilo of Nobleza Gaucha for $3 and a half kilo of Union Manzana for $3. That's Argentina pricing.

There's also an Uruguay place:
El Chivito D'Oro restaurant has some as well:
84-02 37th Ave
718 424 0600

both places sell mates (the cups) and bombillas (straws) as well. Not so cheap, but well made. This place also looked like it had a really good parrilla going too.

Just another item of interest - Uruguayans are wild about Mate (I think just a little more than the Argies, even) - I didn't think to ask, but they might also be able to get some of those cool leather cases that hold everything for mate that so many people in Uruguay seemed to have when I was there.
