Stroopwafels in NYC

A British women I work with bet me that I could not buy Stroopwafels anywhere in New York. She claims that you can only get them in the Netherlands and that it is so typical of Americans to think that can get anything they want... but c'mon, this is New York City. Does anyone know where I can find these... help me prove her wrong.

For those who do not know, a Stroopwafel is a Dutch cookie/treat that has two wafers with a sweet syrup in the middle. They are extremely delicious!

    1. I think I saw them once at Dean & Deluca. Otherwise, you can order them on the web from all sorts of places.

I KNOW I've seen them all the time but now I can't think of a specific place. I would try Williams Sonoma and Garden of Eden.

          • Typical Brit comment--you CAN get anything here, unlike the UK.

I've purchased them in LA, fer crissakes, let alone NY! At a farmer's market in Santa Monica, no less.

              1. I buy them at Top's in Williamsburg.

                  1. Whole Foods totally has them. The only kind they have are organic and super-expensive, but they're there (at the Chelsea location). You can also get them at the Park Slope Food Coop.

                      1. In Whole Foods and Fairway I've gotten the German made organic stroopwafels that comes in either honey or regular syrup. In the local grocery store(was Cherry Farm grocery, now called Metro grocery store) here in Sunnyside, New York I can get the Canadian made Shady Maple Farm brand.

                          1. I wonder if this is something the Petite Abeille restaurants would have? I know they sell (or used to sell) a few packaged goods, like chocolate.

                              1. I've seen them at the Union Sq greenmarket, at least in the fall.

                                  1. I have bought them from Trader Joes

                                      1. I see them all the time; true dutch ones. I've seen them from time to time at the Union Square greenmarket, but other places too. Now I can think of lots of more esoteric dutch items that might be hard to find here, but stroopwafels are, as they say, ubiquitous.

                                          1. You can get a bunch of different brands of imported Dutch stroopwaffeln in San Francisco, so she's definitely wrong. I know I've seen one brand of them in Manhattan, but I can't remember where offhand -- probably Fairway or Zabar's.

Chocolate made from vegetable fat, on the other hand, I believe you can only find in Britain. :)

                                                  1. re: Reece

Only because it's illegal everywhere else!

                                                  2. I just saw them at Zabars

                                                      1. I'll chime in and say that Fairway [UWS Broadway location] has them also, and they are of the larger variety. The box looked like it held cookies that were circa 2½ - 3 inches in diameter. IIRC, you can find them *upstairs* in one of the aisles [at eye level].

                                                          1. Cost Plus World Markets have them.

                                                              1. They make them fresh every morning at Danku, the only Dutch restaurant in New York. And they are delicious! I found out about them through Serious Eats: http://newyork.seriouseats.com/2009/0...

                                                                  1. Whole Foods has them in Chicago near the bakery section. I used to live in the Netherlands as a kid and have searched high and low for these things over the years. I'm finally glad I can get my fix every now and then. There also is a Dutch family now residing in Montana that does online ordering. I've tried them and they're the real deal:

                                                                    http://www.caramelcookiewaffles.com/

                                                                      1. I believe I've seen them in Chelsea Market's Chelsea Market Baskets

                                                                          1. Stroopwafels probably have been around in New-Amsterdam.. ehrm New-York since it was founded by the Dutch in 1624 haha
