When I was at Cooper Union in the forties and couldn't afford eating out, delicious vestedda sandwiches sustained me. A foccacheria on 10th St & 1st or 2nd Ave. sold them. I don't know if anyone still makes them. Can anyone help?

If you can get to Brooklyn try Gino's on 18th Ave (71 St) in Bensonhurst. Great vastedda. Ferdinando's on Union Street, too, but I'll stick with Gino's for spleen any day.

Gino's rocks. The vastedde there is impeccably fresh, not a hint of funky flavor, and tender. The same can't be said of that place on 2nd Ave. in the East Village. While not bad it had an off, kinda gamy flavor and was anything but tender. I suspect the meat was cooked ahead of time and only dried out more in the oven.

Eat on,

Also in Brooklyn: Joe's of Ave. U: 287 Ave. U (near MC. Donald).

Ferdinando's is at 151 Union, near Hicks St. Basically lunch only (open to 7 or 8 but dinner stuff is not fresh).

Both of the above also sell Panelle specials, the Sicilian check pea fritter sandwich.
