I love them too, and for some reason, they're not that easy to come by, I've found. Here are my three suggestions:

1. Buy your favorite type of apple at the farmers' market, get a bag of Kraft caramels, melt the caramel in a saucepan with a little milk to thin the mixture, cut up the apple, and dip to your heart's content (it's a little more work, but the end product is so much fun and even more delicious than the pre-prepared version).

2. Last year, a vendor at the Farmers' market by the courts in Brooklyn was selling caramel apples, but he seemed not to have washed the apples first, and they had a musty scent from cold storage that was really off-putting. But you could try them and see if it's better this time.

3. Rocky Mountain Chocolate (they have outposts in the Jersey Gardens mall right by Ikea in Elizabeth, NJ and in Woodbury Commons mall) makes a solid caramel apple, as well as caramel apples with every additional topping you could imagine. I have been relatively pleased with their product.

Hope this helps!

There is a Rocky Mountain on Chambers and W. Broadway (by the 2/3 stop) -- i had a caramel apple with pecans there in july and it was aweseome. the pecans were a special touch.

LAST fall, in Grand Central Station, on the lower level, the Little Pie Company had caramel apples. A woman in line before me paid almost $4 for one apple, so they must be pretty good. It looked good, I just couldn't get past the equation of how many pounds of apples (and caramel, for that matter) one can get for four bucks.
