I will be utterly blown away if anyone knows what these are, much less where to find them. My partner's grandmother used to make pannelle - fried chick-pea flour pancakes - and we've been looking everywhere for an Italian place that serves the real thing. Any help would be much appreciated - we'll travel to any borough to enjoy them. Thanks!

Pannelle sandwiches are served at Ferdinando's Focacceria in the Carroll Gardens section of Brooklyn; those & the rice balls are very good Address: 151 Union Street, between Columbia & Hicks. I'm guessing the closest train would be the F to Carroll Street.

I think they are also a special at Otto, but I don't remember which day of the week they're offered (Saturdays?).

One of the Bensonhurst standbys--I can't remember which one, unfortunately--also does them, and very well according to a Palermo-born ex-girlfriend of mine. If you strike out elsewhere, I'd suggest rooting around out there.

Joe's of Ave. U in Bensonhurst has terrific pannelle that you can buy fresh and fry up at home. I usually buy them by the dozen and freeze them at home. They fry up beautifully ....just like you get at the stands on the beach in Sicily. Fernando's on Union St. in Carroll Gardens also has good pannelle.
