I had some wonderful whitefish salad on a toasted bagel at a great bagel shop in San Rafael, California last week. When I asked the man behind the counter who made the whitefish salad? He told me that he imported it from New York. Please, or please, tell me there is a vendor, preferably with a web site, in New York where I can order this stuff from.

I want to spread this stuff on bagels for all of eternity.

I am sure there are a variety of places that ship whitefish salad, I personally like Sable's (link below), their store is operated somewhere on the Upper East Side by a former employee of the Zabar's.

I, personally, prefer, the herring salad, but the whitefish salad is very good. The other appetizing is excellent. Service is good too. (Although the Asian-American proprietor, is a bit too kitschy w/ his Yiddishims, on occasion)

E*A*T on Madison Ave. has the best whitefish salad I've ever had, or could ever imagine. It's ludicrously expensive though (I don't remember the price, but I do remember laughing out loud when I saw it posted). You should at least taste it once.

I don't know if they ship.

Is your bagel place the kind that would bring in stuff from the kind of esoteric hotsy-totsy places mentioned below? Maybe. But if not, it could have come from Acme Smoked Fish, a manufacturing company in Brooklyn. They are a pretty big company, but their stuff can be excellent. Probably only available wholesale or through distributors, though.

Acme's Whitefish is available at H&H on 80th & Broadway. It's not quite the Platonic ideal of Whitefish, but it's pretty good. I know I've had better over the years, but I can't for the life of me remember where.

This is a little bagel shop in the "burbs" run by Asians (who turn out wonderful, real bagels) so I am pretty sure they are not importing from one of the high-end New York purveyors, but that may be my only option for little ole me, if I want to import this stuff, I have never seen it in L.A.

Unfortunately, there are no Noah's Bagels in The Dining Wilderness That Is The Inland Empire, so alas I will still have to import from somewhere. I am obligated as part of my 'houndish duties to report, however, that my 82 year old mother had her first bagel dog at a Noah's for her birtday, which coincidentally was April 1. So loved the bagel dog.

I think she is a closet Chowhound. About 25 years ago she did the whole Pritikin diet thing, but in the last 20 years or so, she has been hanging out at 'Q joints eating ribs off and on.

A friend of mine once made her own herring salad that was really good. She used those jars (NOT in cream sauce) of herring (I know, I know, I would never buy them either, but that is what she used and I would never have known if she hadn't told me!). She added some chopped apple and some of the onions packed in with the herring and whirred it around in a food processor.

It was really was good...and we were in the Midwest, so it's not like she could have gone down to the appetizing store on the corner.

If you are jonesing and you can find the jar stuff, try it.

...well, I guess because real NYers wouldn't buy herring in a jar!!

But, I have eaten the finished product and I would make it from that if I couldn't find it elsewhere. It was tasty and the apple and onions give it the right texture and a fresh taste.

Chino Wayne,

Perhaps call Nate n' Al's on Beverly Dr. in Beverly Hills and see if they have whitefish salad, and if that doesn't pan out try the various locations of Jerry's Deli. There's also NY Bagel Cafe (I think that's the name) in Brentwood on San Vicente in the shopping plaza than has the Frontrunners sneaker store. (nearest cross street, Barrington) They had the closest-to-NY bagels I found when I lived out there, and they may have good whitefish salad as well.

Their address is 11640 San Vicente, #111 and phone: 310.820.1050.
