Had some smoked (yum-yum) by a gen-u-ine Native American in Klamath River country (Oregon-No.Calif) years ago. Never to be found again. Got any ideas where some is available without going back to Pacific N.W.?

Your best bet is to track down Jim Dixon--a Portland chowhound who posts regularly, but may not read the New York-centric cravings board, and who has a great website called realgoodfood.com--and see if he can hook you up. The best stuff is made in small batches by small producers--big surprise--but he may know someone who's taking advantage of the Internet and overnight delivery.

Fairway's organic foods department (upstairs) has a rack in the bulk grains section (turn left when you come out of lift) that has some turkey, salmon and tuna jerky. Not sure it's as good as what you had, but it might satisfy the craving. Beware -- very pricey.

Oneof the best purveyors of salmon, smoked and otherwise is Portlock--Port Chatam Smoked Seafood out of Everett Washington. We order selections for Christmas every year. They have a splendid mail order service--best smoked oysters, BTW, I've ever had --and they offered a salmon jerky among numerous other seafood items. The link is below. Let us know what you think.

The place you are talking about might be The Klamathtrading Company, where you can also place an online order:
www.klamathtradingco.com

Another online option is (Seattle) Pike Place Fish Market (they're called smoked salmon "belly strips":
www.pikeplacefish.com

I've bought the smoked salmon jerkey "belly strips" (excellent) at the Admiral Thriftway in Seattle and the seafood guy says they should have some in before Christmas, and he can fedex them overnight $25/lb. 1-206-937-0551

I used to practically live on the Pike Place Market belly strips when I lived in Seattle... they are really good. I tried the ones from Klamath Trading co and they may be even better. I only had them once so it's hard to remember...
