The best place EVER for cupcakes is The Cupcake Cafe on 9th Avenue & 39th Street. They have beautifully decorated cupcakes & cakes. Also, try Magnolia Bakery in the West Village for great cupcakes.

Actually, I think the Cupcake Cafe is as overrated as their cupcakes are DRY.
Magnolia Bakery does better ones, but the chocolate ones with chocolate icing at London Mitchel Foods near the Cupcake Cafe -- at 40th or 41st on 9th Avenue -- win hands down. Big, moist, luscious.

I could not agree more. I work in the Port Auhthority area and find that the cupcakes at Cupcake Cafe are beautiful but are dry and the frosting is greasy tasting. Magnolia Cafe's cupcakes are better but they do not measure up to Mitchell London's cupcakes. The one I ate had a moist yellow pound cake like base and a rich smooth chocolate frosting that tasted more like fine chocolate than butter. FYI- Cupcake Cafe does have an excellent whole wheat/citrus cake donut that is defintley worth eating.
