For the truly adventurous, I got 1/2 a roasted chicken from a guy in front of Chavez meat market on Middlefield just across from Hoover School. You can see the smoke for blocks. $5.00 including beans, hot sauce, and tortillas - provided lunch and dinner but hot sauce IS HOT. Another guy next door was selling chickens, too - looked terrible and he was obnoxious.

I second the recommendation for Chicken Chicken. The jerk chicken isn't very good, but the other kind is. I often do the $20 dinner for 4 when I don't feel like cooking.

I've really been happy with the chicken from the Roli Roti trucks that park in local farmers markets and store parking lots in many parts of the Bay Area. They rotisserie roast Fulton Valley chickens that they've coated with a very delicious rub. The chickens I've had have been juicy and not dried out (they claim that if a chicken is 30 minutes off the rotisserie, they save it for charities or food banks) -- very good!!

I've gotten my chickens at the Serramonte farmers market on Thursdays, but I've seen the trucks at the Milk Pail in Los Altos on Mondays and they have a calendar that lists many other sites on their website:

Inspired by your post, it being Thursday, I went out and got a whole roasted chicken ($10, a bit pricey I thought) from the Roli Tori truck yesterday at Serramonte. It turned out to be quite good, better than most places in SF, and par with Gira Polli's similarly herbed version. However, I still prefer Chicken! Chicken!. Maybe it's that wood fire oven that does the trick.

BTW, I thought the Serramonte market (Thusdays 9 am to 1 pm), if yesterday was typical, is very good these days. Last time I was there was about 6 months ago and it's gotten bigger and better, with more variety. I recognized several vendors from the currently-in-hiatus Fillmore market, Noe Valley market, and Alemany market. Prices are somewhat higher than the mentioned markets, but maybe that's because it's not the best season for produce.

I haven't been to Chicken! Chicken! in years, but I stopped going there because I thought the chickens were overcooked with dry white meat. Based upon your recommendation, however, I'll go back, try them again and report here.
