Best veggie burgers in Manhattan?

igj Dec 18, 2000 01:39 PM

While living in San Francisco I was a regular at a burger restaurant that had dozens of varieties of burgers and almost every burger on the menu was offered in two different vegetarian options (a tofu burger or a Gardenburger).

I am looking for a place similar to this in Manhattan (or Brooklyn). Anyone have a good lead?

Try Kate's at the corner of Avenue B & 4th Street. They have lots of veggie burgers - Karin's burger, with spinach, cheese, and portobello mushrooms is particularly tasty, as is the BBQ option. Get the garlic fries (mmm) as a side instead of the mashed potatoes (eh) and have an order of the delectable unbuffalo wings, too.

      Don't forget the hummous!

I used to like the mashed potatoes. Oh, well. Also, I loved their grilled vegetable sandwich.

I also have a fondness for the tofu "buffalo wings" at Kate's, which are absolutely nothing at all like chicken. They just batter and deep fry pieces of tofu and toss them with spicy, wing-style sauce. Yum.

They only have one option, but Houston's has a very good veggie burger.

The Herban Kitchen on Hudson Street right below Spring Street has great veggie burgers. They make one with lentils, carrots and portabella mushrooms that inspired me to make my own.
