Maybe it wasn't the best, but Dosanko held a place in my heart. I think it was the first chain to bring Japanese noodle soup to New York and it turned many of us into happy slurpers. Now that all the branches of Dosanko have closed, where does one go? I know the East 45th Street Menchanko-tei -- it's in the neighborhood where I work and it's quite good. Anybody have any others to suggest in Manhattan?

I miss Dosanko too! I used to work right next door to the one on Madison and enjoyed many, many orders of takeout larmen. There was a noodle shop on University Place that I used to like. Don't remember the name, but it was on that first block just south of Union Square.

Now, if there were only a good noodle shop in Portland...

I too eat at Men Kui Tei once a week. I've eaten my way through 70% of the menu(which means about 8 items). It's the best in this hood for sure. If you go avoid the lunch hour rush and tip heavily for the waitresses are the nicest around. The place in Union Square is called Tokyo LoMein though I've never eaten there.

A nice Dosanko is still doing business
in Flushing on Northern Blvd near the Flushing
YMCA. If you need a Dosanko fix you can
walk there from the last stop on the #7 subway.

The above Dosanko is one block east of Main Street at Union Street & Northern Boulevard. Also, the spot has a plentiful Chinese/Korean crowd & serves nice reasonably priced sushi & sashimi - all with picture menus.

Also not the best, but I'm very fond of it and it hits that lunchtime-noodle-soup-craving spot: Sapporo, on 49th between 6th and 7th.

If you crave a similar "salaryman" noodle shop, try Sapporo on 49th Street between 6th & 7th avenue. Besides larmen, they serve pretty good individual sukiyaki & tempura, tonkatsu, etc. Sorry, they do have shumai, but I don't remember seeing shrimp gyoza on their current menu.
