No trip to Coney Island for my family was ever complete unless we visited Shatzkins on Surf Ave. for knishes. After the original store closed, there were locations in Kings Plaza and on Emmons Ave., but never as good. Anyone know who makes a knish remotely similar in TASTE to Shatzkins? (There are frozen knishes which LOOK like the real thing but YUCK!) Thanks for any info. PS- My grandmother always made a side trip to the Boardwalk to buy from Jerry's knishes.

  1. I never tried Shatkin's but there are two places I'd refer folks to in NYC for knishes.1) Yona Shimmel's on the lower east side. I'm guessing it's Houston Street about five blocks west of Katz's (Help me out here, folks).2) Knish Nosh (sp?) on Queens Blvd in Forest Hills near Yellowstone Blvd. If they are still there, try them. If not, please observe a moment of silence because our chowhound universe is somehow smaller. And what's the latest on Ratner's, my landsmen? Thumbs up or thumbs down???

Yonah Shimmel's is on Houston just east of Christie, I do believe. I used to like their beigelehs back in the 70s, but the last time I got a knish there, close to 2 years ago, I wasn't thrilled. I think that some of the Polish and Ukranian places slightly further north may be better, though I have yet to find a consistently great one.

It is my understanding that Ratner's closed a couple of months ago; wasn't there an announcement to that effect here?

Rachel and I had kasha and potato knishes at the Carnegie (55 and 7th) on friday night... and while their Matzo Ball soup is nothing to write home about, this is probably the best place in NY to sit down and have knishes and hot dogs. Their knishes are massive and incredibly tasty. Their pastrami and salami sandwiches are massive and delicious too.

Ratners is closed for sure. Mrs. Stahls was better for kinishes then Yonah Shimmels. But it was also about a year ago that I last went. I remember Shatzkins, we too would always stop there when we were in coney island. My mom would always get the cherry cheese, I prefered those on the savory side. But try Mrs. Stahls, they are VERY good.

Mrs. STahls is the best by far!!!! I grew up in Brooklyn, and had relatives on Brighton 12th, and always ate there... am going to try to order some on line if possible!!!

Hey how has Mrs. Stahl's knishes kept up? When I was a kid a thousand years ago they were the best. But I know they changed hands several times and even tried selling frozen ones that were to be defrosted and heated in L.A. Anybody out there taste them lately?

I grew up in lower Manhattan. I now live in... Alabama! Does Yonah Shimmel ship knishes? Does any New York Knishery Ship?

            3. For shame! Does no one go to Mrs Stahls at the bend underneath the D train in Brighton Beach. While not as good as it used to be it's still the best. Potato and Kasha mmm mmm real soul food.

              1. oh. my. gawd!!! What memories you brought back mentioning Shatzkin's. In this diehard brooklynite's opinion, Surf Avenue was the ONLY place to get the quintessential knish. Cradle one of those hot prizes in your hand, slather on some real yellow deli mustard, salt, pepper -- heaven, simply heaven. Thanks for the lovely memory.

                1. need address & phone number for shatzkins.

will they ship to carlsbad, california??
