It's not difficult to find a pretty wedding cake but I'm more interested in one that tastes great. Any suggestions?

I have to say the Sylvia Weinstock cake I ate at a recent wedding was not that great. As a matter-of-fact I was dissapointed. It did look pretty though. I know of somebody in Miami who makes beautiful and delicious wedding cakes, etc... Just in case you or anyone else is interested.
Congratulations...

I got married just this past April and taste was a more important factor than looks for us as well (my hubby is an aspiring pastry chef). We went with Sarabeth's who does what ever you want -- but guides you in a direction if you're clueless. We wanted something that tasted great with a good classic vanilla/chocolate balance, that wasn't robed in that plasticy, and icky-tasting (but pretty) fondant, that was pretty and that people would want to scarf down. We ended up with a vanilla sponge caked moistened in a hazelnut syrup with a spread of apricot jam, filled with dark chocolate ganache, iced with vanilla- bean buttercream. She decorates the cake with fresh flowers (which worked great) and the thing tasted divine. Sadly (or happily depending on how you look at it) it was the only thing I ate the night of the wedding: I was too nervous to actually eat the dinner, itself.

I can totally relate to the nervous part, and it's still three weeks away. Thanks to all for the recommendations. We've decided to go for something decidedly downhome - each table will have their own cake from the Magnolia Bakery, if I get my order in to them soon enough! Will report back after the honeymoon (which should yield a post on the Southwestern board) on the results. Thanks again!

Our wedding cake was baked by Louise Hoffman, who worked at the New Prospect bakery (I think that's what it's called; it's on 7th Ave. and Lincoln Place in Park Slope) and was divine. However I do not think Louise works for New Prospect anymore, and I don't know how to get in touch with her. Does anyone else?

Louise Hoffman is on the faculty at NY tech, in the culinary arts dept.

I also make wedding cakes, kind of non-traditional, seasonally themed designs. They are also quite tasty. Contact me if you're interested...

As far as taste is concerned, I think a Sylvia Weinstock cake (lower Manhattan) is like a Chanel suit--classic, consistently extraordinary--and you can save the decorations because she makes them out of pastillage which you can keep under glass for a lifetime (if that is your thing.) Alas, her prices, are also on a par with Chanel. But the flavors are pure, the buttercreams real, and no rolled fondants on the outside.

It's been eight (deliriously happy) years, but our wedding cake was done by Veneiro's in the East Village. Not only was it wonderfully yummy, but it cost a fraction of what the other places we looked into were asking.

I don't know anything about their wedding cakes, but they sell a biscotti there they call Quasimali (sp?) which are unbelievably delicious. I mean, the best cookie of that type--nutty, crunchy, spicy, I've ever eaten. Unfortunately for them, and fortunately for me, I have the recipe so don't have to bother stocking up anymore, but if in your wedding cake research you enter their portals, buy a box for the trip home!
