Hankering after Taylor Ham - made in New Jersey, but haven't yet found it in Northern Westchester, where I now live. Great sliced and pan fried, on bread with mayo!

Any suggestions on where to buy, or shall I drive on down to NJ?

I thought it was called "Taylor Pork Roll..." I remember going to Asbury Park (or was it in Atlantic CIty? we went to both), NJ with my dad and we would stop on the boardwalk at Taylor's for a pork roll and birch beer. YUM!!!!

Cool to watch it cook too: They thick-sliced the pork roll (looks like a log o' salami or bologna) and clipped it between these tong-like things. These things sat over a grill and were seated in a grooved track that went from one end to the other and turned them as they went along. When it got to the other end, it was done - and put on a hamburger roll (mustard added by you!). Soooo good (to my little girl memory, anyway)!

Then we would go get Kohr's frozen custard (butterscotch ripple or raspberry ripple were my favorites). It was the REAL thing...

Thanks for jogging a great memory, Nancy C!

I also found a place in Philly that will ship 4 lbs of it to you for some crazy price, but it might make a grand gift for my sister in Massachusetts... They claim it's classic Philadelphia food, but it is NEW JERSEY FOOD!!!

Thanks for the memories of grilled Taylor Pork...Wish it weren't raining, or I'd fire up the grill!

Hey, I've been up here so long I almost forgot about Taylor ham until I read this board. I remember scoring the edges of each slice in 4 places before frying it so that it stayed flat. We always ate it on a Kaiser roll, not on plain bread. It must be available somewhere up here in western Massachusetts. I'm going to look around. But meanwhile, if anyone else finds it first, please post!

I'm so glad to be able to *finally* get some Taylor Ham! I grew up in New Jersey, but have been away from there for 35 years - in Oklahoma. (Don't come here unless you *really* like chicken fried steak - no one here cooks much of anything else!!)

There were 4 particular foods I've sorely missed --Ronzoni Pastina (finally found some a few years back), Taylor Ham (absolutely wonderful stuff pan-fried on white bread - preferably Wonderbread!), TastyKakes (great!!) and a good egg cream (this one's a lost cause, I think!)

Now I've got resources for three of the four - a couple of weeks ago, I saw a Food Channel "Best of..." show that featured - yep! TastyKakes!!! Gotta get over to Foodtv.com and look that address up...

Hi,
My husband just ran in the NYC Marathon and we stuffed as many Taylor Hams as we could in our suitcases for the return trip to Chicago. He has great memories of eating it as a child when he visited his relatives in New York during the summer. I've learned to love it too. Anyone know of any place in the Chicago area that might sell it?

Hello :)

I was born and raised in Northern NJ but am now also living in the Chicago area. I was glad to get out of the Toxic State(23 years is enough for anyone ;) but I still miss many of the foods from my youth and especialy taylor ham... I was doing a search for it when I found this place lol. I even have a case of birch bear in my pantry and I break out a bottle for special occasions. I would kill for a decent slice of pizza or a real calzone too lol!

If you find any place that has taylor ham in Chicago area please let me know...I've gone far too long with out.

I, too, was delighted to see the Taylor ham post when it came up--memories of my grandmother in NYC and childhood visits to NYC from Detroit --always heavy on the Taylor ham. (you know we're the real thing because we never call it Taylor Pork roll...)I know it can be had in suburban Detroit (Papa Joe's in Rochester) so I'm sure it must be available in great Chicago. Maybe you can get a Jersey friend to slip one over to you FedEx? They freeze well as you might well know. I loved NOT making little cuts and letting it curl up into a shallow cup -sopped up the juice with toast. Delish.

Spent Thanksgiving in Florida with the in-laws...New Jersey Italians who just sold the home place and moved down for good...all of my wife's siblings were there, and of course they talked about childhood food...especially Taylor ham.

So I get back to Portland and a day or two later stop into a sandwich spot called Richie B's (NW Kearny off 23rd)...great cheese steak, meatball wedge, eggplant parm sandwiches, even Wise potato chips...and there in the case is a row of chubby little Taylor Pork Roll (aka "ham")...about $9, but it's in my reefer right now just waiting to be sliced

If you've transplanted to LA, like I have, and get a craving for it, you can buy it at the butcher in the Fairfax Farmers Market. It's about 6 bucks for the one pound roll.

Just about one of my favorite things on the EARTH! As a lifelong Michigander with all relatives in NYC this was a staple visiting grandma, the aunts and the cousins. Fried in a pan with butter it's the essence of a happy childhood. My husband can't believe anybody eats it--ditto my brother-in-law. It's a way to mainline back to age 10, visiting the glam city, staying in (exotic) fifth floor apartments, visiting butcher shops under the el that still had sawdust on the floor. I know you can get in places in the Detroit area (Pappa Joe's in Rochester Hills.) Does sound kind of pricey by mail. Have you checked any of the local gourmet shops--maybe they can order for you. Plus is freezes well. Thanks for the trip down gustatory memory lane.

Ordered it through a restaurant supply chain called Boar's head provisioners. cost was 5.00 / lb...which isn't bad considering it's usually about 4.5-5.0 pound in jersey...

I'm going to Philly next week...hope to get a few.

neil,
my wife, her sister and their mother have been extolling the glories of taylor ham for two decades now. i tried it once, but married her anyway. The odd thing is that my wife is almost always a good guide to great food; she's a terrific cook as well. There may be some snippet of odd DNA that causes this affection for this particular "food". Here's a suggestion: when offered some Taylor ham, say, "I love Taylor ham, but I wouldn't care for any today." Then smile and nod a lot when they rave about it. It is a modest price to pay for a good friend or a good spouse.
