Its amazing how you immediately start craving certain things when you notice their abscence -- Rachel and I went to see "X-Men" at the movies a few days ago in Morristown NJ, and on my visit to the concession stand, I walked up to the counter and asked for Goldenberg's Peanut Chews and a large Coke.

"You want what?" the pimply-faced 16-year old stand attendant said.

"Goldenberg's... Peanut... Chews" I responded, as if I was talking to some village idiot. After all, Goldenberg's peanut chews have been the staples of movie theatres for what, billions of years? I mean arent they THE penultimate movie candy?

"Um, I'm not sure what you're talking about, we've never had those" responded the Kid.

"What the hell do you mean you've never had them?" I implored. What was this, the freaking Twilight Zone? "Those little caramel things with peanuts in them covered with chocolate, with the red and brown wrapper that's never changed since the beginning of time?"

"Um... we have peanut brittle.... thats the only thing we have with peanuts in them.."

Maybe it was Loews, maybe its regional trends, I dunno. But I thought Goldenberg's were essential to the east-coast moviegoing experience. Did anyone else notice these things disappeared at movie theatres?

For you out of towners (I think Goldenbergs are purely an east coast thing, they are produced in Philadelphia) I includeded the companie's URL so you can order them direct. Trust me, they go good with movies.

I'm not sure if this falls under "What's My Craving" or should go up to the "Funky Food Combo" thread, but my office building newstand sells miniature Peanut Chews and Charleston Chews. Alternating bites of the two is a wondrous experience when the mid-afternoon doldrums hit.

I like them too. They're also packaged in a yellow wrapper as "Chewettes". Strangely, where I work, there is one vending machine with Goldenberg's and just down the hall another one with Chewettes (Both machines are maintained/filled by the same company). I've never seen Chewettes outside of a vending machine.

I had never heard of Goldenberg's until I moved to New York from the midwest 11 years ago. They don't exist in Chicago.

You can find them in Chicago at a place up north across from the Lincoln movie theaters called "The Milk Pail." It is a kosher deli-appetizing/grocery store. I lived in Chicago for about 5 years as a transplanted New Yorker and I found them after about 3 yrs! Since they are kosher, the best place to find them is in a kosher grocery!

Thanks for the info. As a recent emigre to the Pacific Northwest, I have missed Goldenberg's dearly. Your link didn't work for me, but I was able to find the store at www.goldenbergcandy.com.

Thanks for posting their URL.

I recently found a small single package original peanut chew in a restaurant out here in Los Angeles. It brought back memories of my days going to the movies 50 years ago in the Philadelphia area. Now I'll be able to buy them again. Many thanks.

Do you know how long it's been since I've had a Goldenberg's Peanut Chew? I left the east coast in 1977 and haven't seen them since. Arrrggghhh! They were absolutely my favorite movie treat when I grew up in Washington, DC. They were better than popcorn, or Black Crows, or Jujubes, or even Heath Bars. But they don't exist out here (Las Vegas), along with Philadelphia Scrapple and Crosset & Blackwell Seville Orange Marmalade. Of course, now I am on a restricted diet and all those wonderful things are on my "NO-NO" list anyway, but I do wish I had a Peanut Chew right now. Yummmmm!
