I'd walk a mile for a great grilled hot dog when that craving hits me at work and I often do walk a mile in my search. I found a street cart at 51st & 6th, but would appreciate suggestions closer to 57th & 6th. Any ideas? It is summer, after all.

  1. It has been more than ten years since I've had one, but the grilled hot dogs at the Carnegie used to be quite good. Of course, you'd walk far less than a mile, so the calorie input/output might go out of whack.

True, it takes them a little time to prepare them grilled so I guess I could take a walk around the block at a brisk pace. Thanks for reminding me!

    2. But are they grilled or boiled/steamed the way they
      usually are in carts?

I think the cart is called the Hot Dog King and he actually grills them so they have a crisp skin. They are large, one was enough, I got two, thinking they would be skinny, I gave the second to a colleague. They were good, just a long walk when there's just enough time to dash out for something.

Don't eat from those carts. No telling what you're ingesting, but the diagram from an episode of "The Simpsons" featuring rat's anuses probably isn't far wrong. The only place I ever go for hot dogs these days is Katz's Deli down on Houston Street in the East Village. The dogs there are so superb you'll swear you're back in Germany, and unlike the other famous delis, Katz's doesn't rip you off for price, charging only $2 apiece. These hot dogs are sensational, and so much tastier than the garbage from the carts that you won't believe it.

        1. I agree with both counts here--Katz's are the greatest and I fear "street meat"--why not walk down to the Carnegie Deli or Stage Deli and get a really good one there? Or if you are really up on cash, go to Brooklyn Diner, they are FABULOUS there, homeade onion rings and all.

I've heard that the hot dogs from Katz's deli are great. I'd like to know if anyone knows what brand they use. I live in N.J. and we have a few places that make excellent hot dogs. Syd's in Union is thew best in my opinion. Foot long charbroiled dog with natural casing. Uses Best's all beef frank.

Your question: "I've heard that the hot dogs from Katz's deli are great. I'd like to know if anyone knows what brand they use."

I'm almost certain Katz's uses Hebrew Nationals. But give 'em a call.
