When I was a child, my grandfather introduced me to licorice snaps, a colorful candy with sugar over black licorice. About six months ago they stopped being available in my area or where my grandparents live. I'm dying to get my hands on them again. I love to eat them while I read. Any info on a source for them would be appreciated.

Licorice Snaps
One company that used to make them was American Licorice but they have stopped. If you'd like them back please contact: AMERICAN LICORICE CO., 2477 Liston Way, Union City CA. USA, 94587 Phone (510) 487-5500 or within the USA 800-220-2399. The National Marketing Managers is Will Miller 630-325-4853 Ext 12.

Physical Specifications
It should be noted that other companies made these products are well, for instance Sweets Plus (now out of business). Licorice Snaps were a hollow candy coated with pastel colors . They were very different than licorice pastels. As far as we know they are not currently in production anywhere. Although there are rumors about the COUNTRY GENERAL STORE having a brand. Also spotted under the brand name Evon. But we have NO details or source.
More details: They were about 3/4's of an inch long and a little bigger around than a pencil. They were made out of black licorice and were a hollow tube of licorice. Each piece is coated with one color candy shell. The colors they have been made in are green, pink, orange, and white. They are not hard, but rather soft due to the hole.

Are these like the British licorice bits? The British version is striped and pastel-covered, some with 'sprinkles' and it has a wonderful flavor. Darn - I can't think of the name of them, right now!

I'm answering my own question. The British 'version' is called Licorice All-Sorts! Is that similar at all in taste to Licorice Snaps? If you haven't tried All-Sorts - try it!

My dad loves these. I finally found two places that carry them www.nostalgiccandy.com and also http://store.yahoo.com/oryans/candy.html A little cheaper then $8.95 as previously posted and well worth it. Enjoy!
