I know, its a bit beneath the more haute cravings on Chowhound, but I haven't had one at a Mcdonalds in at least 15 years, and it happens to be St. Patty's day. I can't even remember exactly what it tasted like, sorta minty? And it had this cool green monster character associated that looked kinda like The Grimace.

The past few years I would go looking for Shamrock Shakes in New York City. Generally, the conversations would go something like this:

Me: Hi. Do you have Shamrock Shakes?
McDonalds Employee: Huh?
Me: You know, Shamrock Shakes. They're green and minty.
McDonalds Employee: Umm.....we have vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry?

Me: Hi. Do you have Shamrock Shakes?
McDonalds Employee: Wha?
Me: Shamrock shakes?
McDonalds Employee: Ramrock snakes?
Me: No...S-h-a-m-r-o-c-k s-h-a-k-e-s.
McDonalds Employee: Umm....we got milkshakes?
Me: No...green shakes?
McDonalds Employee: We got white, black, and pink?

Me: Hi. Do you have Shamrock Shakes?
McDonalds Employee: Ummm...
Me: Never mind.

Needless to say I gave up my quest. The last Shamrock shake I had was five years ago and procured for me by my father on Long Island. I have no idea what McDonalds he got it from. And it was delicious. It tasted like minty chalk, in a good way, like Tums.

Well, Rachel and I rent on a quest for Shams this weekend in Jersey... needless to say we basically came up empty.

Every McDonalds we walked into we basically ended up having the same conversation you had.. We found out that Shamrock Shakes are a special promotional item that is up to the store owner to decide to carry or not. So you never know which McDonalds carry them. Personally, I think Mcdonalds should carry the Sham year round, as its a nice alternative to the vanilla and chocoloate, and much better than the horrid ersatz strawberry flavor.

Eventually, we ended up at Bertolotti's in Cliffside Park on Anderson Ave on Saturday afternoon (as it turns out is right next to a McDonalds, but we didnt bother going in, DOH!) where we each had really good chocolate mint gelato shakes. Not the same thing, but probably better than the real thing.

I had found out from my friend Jon that the McDonalds next to Bertolotti in FACT carried Shams, so we went back later on that evening after dinner. To my horror I found out they basically ran out of syrup the night before. The manager of the McD's felt my pain and mixed me a free vanilla shake with the remaining dribs of Sham flavoring he had left in the container, but it wasnt the same, the flavor wasnt strong enough to mix a single shake. It was basically just a vanilla shake that wished it could be a Sham.

Oh the humanity.

I found this link on the Net with the supposed recipe to the Shamrock Shake. Let me know if its any good.

PS: I have heard since that the Mint McFlurry is in fact a Sham with M&M's mixed in, but I havent tried this yet.

I misspent several hours on the phone a few years ago, calling every single McDonalds in the Manhattan phone book, asking if they had Shamrock Shakes. The reason why it took several hours is the same story you tell - "Do we have WHAT?"

Almost immediately after that, I flew to Minneapolis/St. Paul where I got one at the airport, then on to Las Vegas, where I got one on the Strip. Last year, I got one somewhere on route 81. Is this some kind of NYC conspiracy? What's up with having fried chicken - who eats fried chicken at McDonalds? - but no Shamrock Shakes?

I know this goes way beyond the St. Patrick's Day date since it is now the beginning of May but I couldn't help post a reply in the hopes that next year you are all fulfilled.

The McDonald's on Washington Street in Hoboken had Shamrock Shakes this year! While I didn't have one, the sign itself brought back wonderful memories of this special treat the Wednesday before whatever day St. Patrick's Day fell on. I went to Catholic school and we had half days on Wednesdays and it was our once a year St. Patty's Day treat. Ah, the memories . . .
