Space Food Stix
Space Food Stix:
Does anyone remember these? A legacy of the space programs, they were available in the early 70s. I associate them with Tang. Concentrated fake chocolate flavor in a chewy base shaped much like a slim jim. MU says that they're the ancestor of Power Bars and assumes they're extinct. But, perhaps, there is a stockpile somewhere in a bomb shelter. It's not like they'd GO bad (they were bad to begin with, I assume -- I loved them when I was 6!).
Perhaps Quisp can hook me up...
How can I forget Space Food Sticks? I turned 8 in 1970, so they were a frequant lunchbox treat for me.
I've posted elsewhere on these boards the anecdote I read in Cosmo about when Space Food Sticks were being test-marketed: A woman saw one on an associate's desk and asked, "What's that, a tampon for a midget?" Maybe Space Food Sticks were a descendant of o.b. tampons as well.
It's scary to think that Cool-Whip was the product of an attempt to make non-dairy milk - and they were sure at the time it would never fly, so they were thrilled when they found their new product would whip - so it's related to Edensoy and Vitasoy much more than I'd like to admit.
I often had the peanut-butter flavor of Space Food Sticks, and if you crave that - hey, they still make Tiger's Milk bars.

The Liberty Science Center just across the water in NJ has a few different space food items for sale in their gift shop. They have this crunchy sweet thing that is like a freeze dried ice cream sandwich. It was pretty nostalgic for me to see them, even if they are aren't the same exact thing, they were alot like it. I was 7 in 1970 so I know what you mean!
Interesting post BTW, I always wondered where Cool Whip came from!
Maybe the LSC has a website. It's worth a trip anyway, it's a great museum.

There's a store called Star Magic on Broadway around 8th St. (and they used to have a branch on Bway around 74th St., don't know if that's still there) and they used to have bins full of freeze-dried "space" food. Sounds like what the Liberty Sci. Center has. Don't know how similar this is to what you're looking for or if they still carry it (tho they had it for years), but if you're in the nabe, it might bear checking out.

I'm sitting here eating a MetRX Fudge Brownie bar and it brought back the memories of those kick ass food like products named "Space Food Sticks"
The MetRX bar tastes exactly like the old chocolate version! Only it packs about 100 times the vitamins and nutrients!
God I miss the 70's and 80's-- Sniff sniff...
