  1. Have an Alsterwasser - Beer and lemon/lime soda. It's a truly local thing (at least the name is).

    1. I don't know if you've tried doing a search on this CH board, but I just tried it and only one post came up (below) and it got no recs! I got 139 CH posts on Berlin.

Just a thought, but maybe the better way to go is to ask for a German guide book that chowhounders have used with good results.

      1. Going on Wednesday of this week. Here are the three places that I'm targeting based on some research. May be a bust -- I'll post after I've been there (have some great places for Berlin, but Hamburg is a bit of a question mark):

Haerlin, Raffles Hotel Vier Jehreszeiten, Neuer Jungfernstieg 9-14, 3494-3310

        East, Simon-von-Utrecht-Str.31, 20359

        Schauermann, Hafenstrasse 136-138, 3179-4660

A night out in St. Pauli followed by a smoked eel or krabbensalat sandwich at the fischmarkt.

          2. Definitely visit the Fischmarkt on Sunday morning and do breakfast there!

The Fischmarkt figures prominently in a key scene of the foodie film Mostly Martha, most of which is set in Hamburg. Bropaul, I assume breakfast there includes treats such as hareng?

Not mandatory, but I'm sure they are available!
