don't know if this is what you're looking for, but returned a few weeks ago from BsAs where I had a fabulous meat meal in Palermo Viejo at La Cabrera, Norte. Also, really enjoyed Densivel in San Telmo.

wish I was back there already!

There are probably hundreds of restaurants of the type you specify, but finding them is the problem. I know we have been taken to some over the years in neighborhoods like Villa Crespo, but I have no memory of their names and exact locations -- sorry, tho they were not all equally good. Last year we were taken to a place I liked a lot called Hereford Grille on the Costanera Norte. It is not small or (I imagine) family-owned, but it was also not filled with tourists, and, tho we didn't have to pay for it, my impression was that it was a good deal price-wise.

As Janie says, loads of places fit that description. One of them is El Trapiche, Paraguay 5099 in Palermo. Huge menu, great meat, somewhat brusque waiters who speak no English. It's an authentic local experience.

This summer, we had our last lunch of the vacation at El Trapiche. Good, fun, old fashioned. It was a Sunday, and the place was packed with Argentine families.

We are huge fans of Restaurant Dora. Awesome steaks, seafood and side dishes, with exceptional service.

We liked it so much we ended our Chilean ski trip early so we could
return to BA for one more night at Dora before flying home.
