I have a friend going to Rio and I'd like to have him bring me back a tasty sweet treat. I love sweets, but don't know what to request. Should I just have him pick up a random unfamiliar chocolate bar or a random item at the supermarket and take my chances or does anyone have a recommendation on something that could be picked up easily?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Any "doces caseiros" (homemade sweet): goiabada (guava paste), bananada (banana paste), doce de leite (dulce de leche)... You can find the most popular brands in supermarkets or go to a nicer store and buy a better, homemade one. In Rio you can find at "Feito em Casa" in Ipanema, Jardim de Alah. But there are many other stores that sell this kind of dessert.

Another option is to go to Kopenhaghen (a famous Brazilian chocolate store, they have everywhere, it would be comparable to Godiva in this country) and get chocolates. Some options: their cherry bombom (it's really good) or their famous "nha benta" (chocolate bombom wiht marshmallow).

There are also chocolates and truffles filled with tropical fruits: bacuri, cupuaçu, etc. I don't recall the name of the brand I used to buy but they sell in the airports.
