Driving up to Walnut Creek this Wednesday (via the 5, I'm thinking), wondering if anyone along the way makes/sells a commendable jerky? (any animal considered, side trips not a problem) Thanks!

Wycen Food at 903 Washington Street San Francisco makes a really good beef jerky Chinese style. It is softer and sweet than beef jerky in the American style but if you have never had it than it is worth a try.
Cost is about $9.00 a half pound.

This is now the one remaining place in San Francisco Chinatown still making beef jerky that I know of. There maybe one on Jackson Street on Nob Hill but I have found them to close a few times I have try to go there.

Good luck in your quest.

Jackson Market (around Jackson & Hyde -- don't remember the exact address/cross street) still makes it. As far as I remember though they don't display it, you have to go ask at the counter.

The last time I was in the City and bought some (about 3 years ago) it was about $6.50 for a half-pound.

Good stuff, moist & sweet, but we used to think the reason they hid it behind the counter was because it wasn't up to health codes. Don't know if that's true or not though.

If you come near San Luis Obispo, Cattaneo Brothers is supposed to be good (I'm not a huge jerky gal myself, so I can't really judge). They have an outlet store off of Broad Street near the Mazda dealership, but they also sell the jerky in all the local grocery stores. If you need more specifics, let me know!
