I had a memorable meal at Boccondivino, center city Milan. No menu and no (other) tourists. Heavy on home made salumi and cheese. Wine is served along with all courses. Our final was a Brunello. I'd do it again.

Have been to Ristorante La Giostra twice and would go there again (and again and again!) It is absolutely fabulous. Only problem is it's very popular--would suggest reservations. The menu is so complex--we just had them order for us and it was great!

My "Italian" daughter just told me the Pitti Cafe (right by the Pitti Palace, of course) is really tasty too, but I haven't been there but trust her taste as she was in Italy for the past 6 months and took cooking classes as well.

The dinner my wife and I had at Taverna del Bronzino in Florence was one of the best I've had anywhere. Beautiful room, friendly service, amazing food--just fabulous.

Second this recommendation. We ate there 2 years ago and still talk about it often: the service, the food, the ambience. Just finishing up 3 weeks in Italy (will report soon) and although we have had many amazing meals, none were as good as Taverna del Bronzino as an overall experience.

Beccofino in Florence.
Ristorante Beccofino (wine bar)
Piazza degli Scarlatti, 1R
Lungarno Guicciardini
Tel: 055-290.076

This is the new hot spot with young Florentines. The chef, Francesco Bernadelli, also works at the Osteria della Rendola in Arezzo. He worked in New York and it shows in Tuscan recipes with a twist. It's a nice break from traditional trattorias. On recent visits, I've enjoyed risotto with fried vegetable garnish, a confit of onions with poached eggs and white truffles, grilled eggplant with fresh ricotta cheese and fava puree, and roast New Zealand leg of lamb. I rarely have room for dessert! There is a great wine list and about 50 wines by the glass. Sit in the wine bar for a light meal or in the restaurant for the full menu. Try the outdoor terrace in nice weather.
