The current issue of WINE SPECTATOR features an article by John Mariani on three restaurants titled London's "New Opulence". We visited two this past spring, The Greenhouse and The Square, both in the Mayfair district. The third, Tom Aikens, is in Chelsea. All offer prix-fixe lunch and dinner menus and tasting menus. For London, we found the prices reasonable (gulp!); our favorite was The Square; it's really not opulent at all; the clientel varies from young couples in casual clothing to the landed gentry bedecked in glitter and formal attire. It was also the most affordable. JP

The average price for a dinner at The Square seems to run about £68. For that amount, I'd like a bit of opulence! I see the chef has a past association with someone at Chez Bruce.

I have to agree - Philip Howard of The Square is an amazing chef. I make it a point to stop by and have at least one meal in London at The Square whenever I visit just to see what he is offering for the season. I consider his preparations to be opulent (from seafood, game,to desserts) and under Jacques watchful eye, the front of the house never fails.

I loved The Square when I was in London a few years ago. The food was great and the service was top notch. When my mom and I arrived, the hostess asked us which table we would like (that never happens anywhere else). Glad to hear the restaurant is still doing well.
