If I remember correctly, it is relatively easy to catch a train into Bangkok central; there is a station at the airport. However, I actually had rather good noodle soup at the airport during a stopover, which is an option if you can't leave at all, but I'm sure you'd probably rather get out and about a little more than that if you can!

I was hoping you might be staying closer to town.
I'm not too familiar with the airport surrounds.

You might try registering and posting on the Lonely Planet's Thorn Tree.
There is one regular that lives in that area.
I often see posts there refering people to Chowhound!

Actually the food at the Amari resto is quite good. No need to fear hotel food in Thailand as you might in the US -- some are very good. I had a wickedly hot somtam (just insist you want it Thai-style, not farang style) and an excellent chili fish.
In the morning they do a very nice khao tom (whatever you do don't eat at the resto INSIDE the departure area, on the second floor ... dismal).
