I found a recipe that calls for citric acid for some fruit jellies. Can I omit this? If not, where in the bay area, or better yet, San Francisco can I find this stuff?

A Russian friend uses citric acid in her borscht recipe. She buys it at a European grocery at the corner of 32nd Ave. and Clement Street, across from the Albertson's market.

Sorry I can't be more helpful, but the European grocery store talked about above at 32nd and Clement does carry citric acid, also the Russian grocery store at Geary and 23rd (I think - 21st through 24th somewhere). Can't remember its name for the life of me, but definately a great place to browse for stuff not available elsewhere.

More generally, searching in the outer Richmond has resulted in my favorite finds recently: the peroskis, cloudberry jams (wow!), aquavits, cured meats . . . Lots of Eastern European stuff that cannot be found elsewhere in the city (except at that place in Berkley - House of Norway?) As you can see, not a good chowhound, only remember the food, not the names of the places I got it.

Citric Acid also available at SF Herb Co. on 14th St and So. Van Ness (250 14th St)

Having made cheese with lemon juice and finally using citric acid, I say go for the real thing. (Can't speak to powdered Vitamin C)
