I've been told by a 'gourmand' friend that there are restaurants in Japan that specializes in serving crab only! ( different species, different cooking techniques etc.,) Unfortunately, he only sampled such restaurants in Hokaido. Do such restaurants exist in Tokyo? If so, any recommendations? Just listening to him mentioning ' Hokaido king crab cooked 3 ways - sashimi, baked in salt and grilled as well as steamed Hokaido queen crab and snow crab cassarole' really makes my mouth water.

Many thanks for the feed-back. I'll ask somebody when I get off Shinjuku station. By the way, have you tried the restaurant? Any dishes you can recommend? Thanks again!

Yes, been there several times. My best meal there is ordering a matsuba kani ("pine leaves crab") which is a seasonal item around the winter time (thought not 100% sure). It was steamed and we dip it into some light soy sauce with vinegar. Simple preparation that brings out the sweetness of the meat. Have also tried their all crab meal though I was not as impressed by their prepared food.

Another way to try crab is to do shabu shabu. In Ginza, there is a shabu shabu house. It's name escapes me now (something getsu "month") but it is close to the Seiyo Ginza hotel and occupies several floors of a building. For crab shabu shabu, they give you de-shelled crab leg and you dip it into boiling water for a couple second. Also dipped into light soy sauce and that's very good as well.

He's probably thinking of the Kani Doraku chain which has restaurants all over Japan, including several in Tokyo.

I had one of the Kani (crab) Kaiseki courses at the branch in Dotobori, Osaka. It was very good with kani chawan mushi, kani tempura, kani gratin, kani salad, boiled kani and kanizushi. Not bad for $40.
