I will be visiting BA in September with my partner. I will be celebrating my birthday there and we were wondering if anyone could reccomend a few great places to eat. I unfortunately cannot eat beef so I know I will be missing out on some of the great dishes there, I would appreciate any reccomendations on restaurants that serve equally good beef and other meats.
Has anyone eaten in Faena hotel. It was reccomended by Wallpaper.

In addition to that, I would appreciate any good reccomendations on a guide book to BA that was helpful..I have yet to find one.
If anyone has any suggestions on definate things to do, places to shop and sights to visit, that would eb cool too.

cheers

I spent the month of Jan in BA. Here are a few suggestions:

As far as a guidebook, I used the Timeout Guide to BA, which seemed to be the best. However, I did find that a lot of the listings were outdated.

As far as restuarants, too bad about the beef limitation. If you want a lot of places to choose from go the Las Canitas neighborhood. The heart of the area is at Baez, say at #300 or so. You will have 15 or 20 different restaurants to choose from. I particularly liked Campo Bravo, Baez 292. I also enjoyed a restaurant called Polo there.

For upscale, Sucre is definitely a great place, with an amazing wine list. Should be easy to find the address on the web, it is very popular.

For hanging out, the Palermo Viejo neighborhood has great shops and cafes. Try the areas around Plaza Serrano and Plaza Palermo Viejo.

Also, don't miss the antiques fair every Sunday in San Telmo.

A good place for trying wine is Gran Bar Danazon (sp?), forgot the address but it is very well known. Seems to be the high scale bar of BA, for what this worth. But definitely a fun place to check out.

Also, look out for a great inexpensive wine, called Salentein Malbec. For the price ($8-9 US), it is amazing.

I totally agree with Sucre. We were in BA in December and that was the best meal we had in BA. Do you eat lamb? Their shredded lamb dish is outstanding.

Last year we ate twice in one week at a delicious Spanish fish restaurant in the theatre district called "Hispano" - it was so good we went back for a second time. It is not a fancy place - has that old "buenos aires" feel - the waiters are old pros. All of the seafood is incredibly fresh and the tiny whole baby calamari were amazing. I would highly recommend this place.
As for things to do, definitely go on a tour of the Teatro Colon. It's worth it!

HI, We're going to BA next week for the first time, so I can't offer any restaurant recommendations. As for guidebooks, both Fodor's and Frommer's are coming out with new BA guidebooks in July.
