El Gusto del Pueblo near the Holiday Inn Norte is good, great steaks and cebollitas a la plancha. There is also a place by the Tecnologico de Monterrey owned by a famous Argentinian footballer that has wonderful lamb chops (sorry I don't recall the name so you will have to ask around). In the Zona Rosa there are several good cabrito places and there used to be a good Italian restaurant in the Hotel (Intercontinental I think) which is at the opposite end from the fountain and where the laser light show was held.

I was in Monterrey for 5 days this past January. From the drive in from the airport I didn't expect to like the city much. Boy was I wrong!! I ended up really loving Monterrey. Here are a couple of suggestions

El Gran San Carlos for cabrito. It's good, they give you lots of choices on pieces, parts and accompaniments. Also helps if you know a little Spanish as this place caters mostly to the local trade. It's not a hole in the wall. If you go be sure to try the cafe de olla, best version I think I've had in Mexico.

La Caterina, next door to Gran San Carlos. Serves contemporary Mexican and does an excellent job with it. Very wide selection of tequilas.

La Valentina - upscale, dark, romantic, sexy - AND - with good food.

The Gran Ancira hotel (now part of the Ramada chain) is on the corner of Plaza Miguel Hidalgo. Their dining room is okay, very formal, and a bit pricy, but they do a really fine Sunday brunch. Lots of choices including a mobile palapa where you can get a ceviche cocktail made to order. Also has a really vast pastry display for brunch, much of it house made.

There is a small torta shop across the street from the Ancira with a couple of outside tables. I stopped here one day for a quick lunch. Had a decent torta milanesa and a beer for about $3.50 US. Kitty-corner across Plaza Hidalgo from the Ancira is a very small muni museum that has an expresso cafe that opens out onto the plaza. They offer a small selection of sandwiches, salads and pastries. Servers are young, friendly, knowledgeable about their city and make a mean cup of coffee, making this a relaxing place to sit, watch the crowd go by and rest.

If you have the time and are so inclined, check out the Museum of Mexican History. It's at the far end of the MARCO Plaza (opposite end from the Contemporary Art Museum). When I was there the traveling exhibit was on the Jaguar and was stunning. I've never been so up close and personal wiht Olmec heads as I was here. That installation was slated to close at the end of February and I have no idea what may have replaced it. However, the real find is the permanent collection on the 2nd floor. It's the history of Mexico from pre-columbian times to more or less the present. I still haven't figured out how they got an entire, full size, steam locomotive and rail car up to the 2nd floor for the section on the Revolution. Not only is the 2nd floor exhibit really worth a visit, so is the entire building. It and the grounds are very well done and attractive. Right next door to the Museum of Mexican History is the Museo de Dulces, or a sweets museum, devoted candy :-)).

Cerveceria Cahautemoc (sp?) tours are available M-Sa in English or Spanish. They make Sol, Bohemia, Dos Equis, Carta Blanca, Noche Buena, etc. Most of the process is automated. It's a short tour and interesting if you're into beer.

If you're into folk art, check out Carrapan. About 3 blocks going away from Plaza Hidalgo (a block past the VIPs). It's across the street from a major hotel, but I can't remember which one. I want to say Intercontinental, but I'm not sure. Good quality folk art, prices to match.

I just booked a trip for early June. Can anyone tell me if the Parque Fundidora is close to the Zona Rosa. I am having real trouble getting a handle on distances and there are few if any maps available online.

Any other ideas for food would be welcome.
