Piccolo Abruzzo in Rome

Does anyone have any relatively recent experience with the restaruant Piccolo Abruzzo at 237 Via Sicilia in Rome? My wife and I were there 18 years ago and recall it as one of our favorite dining experiences in Italy. No menu, but plate after plate of memorable antipasti and pasta. However, much can change over so many years, so I'm curious if anyone can comment on this place in anticipation of our return at the end of the year. Thanks.

      Erica, you might want to re-read my post, Rome Trip Report (1 of 2), since I provide more current info.

      The answer to your question is the restaurant is located somewhat south of the Borghese Gardens. Specifically, it's located on Via Sicilia off the Via Veneto. In spite of its proximity to the Via Veneto, the closest surrounding blocks had more offices than retail so it didn't seem as touristy as the Via Veneto itself.

      What a great place! We ate there last week and it doesn't seem to have changed in all this time.

      Antipasti: A large slice of ricotta drizzled in herbs and olive oil. Pork carpaccio, that was oh so good and my favorite item of the night. A fried dough item with tomato and cheese sprinkled on top. Procuitto. Buffalo mozarella. Fagioli beans in a spicy tomato sauce, still a bit crunchy on the outside creamy inside, perfect!

      Primi
      Ravioli with ricotta, pecorino and spinach. Rigatoni in tomato sauce.

      Secondi
      Veal in a butter sauce with potatoes. Excellent, brought to the table and self served.

      Dessert
      A flan like custardy item.

      We had 2 bottles of the deliciously smooth and full bodied house wine, just an empty bottle refilled from a large wooden vat with a plastic spigot. For a digestive we had two kinds of italian liquors that vaguely tasted of Robutissin and Yeager/Cherry flavor. We asked the waitress about the menu change if we ate there the next night and she said only the Antipasti would be the same. Make sure to ask for the Salumi as it is offered as an alternative to the conventional antipasti. The prosciutto was awesome!

      I highly recommend this place and I'll be going back with a very empty belly next time in Rome.

          A reservation would be a good idea. It fills up quickly, but they aren't shy at squeezing you in at another table whether there's room or not. Which, is actually quite fun and you really get to a chance to meet some great people and truly have a "family-style" dinner experience. If you don't speak italian you may have trouble keeping up with conversation at the table. We love this place. The food is great, but for us it's being able to sit down with others and talk to strangers...The endless amount of wine and spirits help as well...

        Sounds exactly like the kind of place we hope to find. Can anyone talk a little about the dishes served? How's the house wine? Someone mentioned a price of 85 euros, was this for 2 people. Thanks

          Hi Stymie. We ate there a few weeks ago and it was 84 Euros for two people for the set menu, including bottled water and house wine. "Menu" is a term I'd use loosely - we never laid eyes on a paper menu per se, they just kept bringing food and it was all good.

          Antipasti included the most delicious (and garlicky) grilled eggplant I've ever had, buffalo mozarella, a basket of dried salamis you just hack off with a knife, slivers of roast wild boar, other grilled veggies, bruschetta, and probably a bunch of other things I'm forgetting.

          Primi were two small plates of pasta - we had the choice between something creative or something traditional and went with traditional - believe we got cacio e pepe and amatriciana, but don't recall (either way, it was DELICIOUS, and not a pasta overload, the way many primi are).

          For a main course, they brought out a frying pan with rabbit still simmering in herbs and wine. I normally won't eat rabbit, but this was lovely. The main course probably changes from day to day and I imagine they're flexible if you tell them in advance what you really like - the waitress certainly was very nice and I've been there since for lunch in a large group where they happily accommodated a non-cheese-eater.

          Dessert was good, but I can't remember what it was. Then there were the freebies like the limoncello (pour as much as you want) after dinner. House wine was very drinkable, and we got the sense that it was a bottomless bottle but perhaps they would have charged had we started a second one. Anyway, delicious meal. Go hungry, leave happy - it's not cheap and it's a bit out of the way, but it's a lot of high quality food and a neat experience.

              Hey Stymie. I've only been once for lunch with a big group. We did the big antipasti spread plus two pastas each (and wine). It came to about 25 per person, if I recall correctly. I'm guessing if we'd done the whole meal (secondi and desserts), it probably would have come to the regular 42 a person, but can't be sure. From what I've seen, most Roman places don't differentiate between lunch and dinner menus (or prices!). Hope that helps.

          We were just there in June 2008, so it seems that after 20 years it hasn't changed, which is fabulous! Everything was authentic and abundant: antipasti, pasta, meat, dessert, wine, and service. And the price was surprisingly reasonable, even with the sad state of the US$. My husband is very picky and this was one of his top 5 meals ever.

              We were there this week actually and the experience was very enjoyable, but unreal at the same time. We asked for the menu for several times as the time got by, but we didn't get the menu. We paid 85 Euro and the bill were handwritten on a piece of paper!!! We thought the food and the whole evening was worth every penny. The waiter (and owner?) Alessandro took very good care of us and we were quite impressed of the "big show" he delivered. We can recommend this place but make sure you have enough place in your stomach before you enter the restaurant!!!

                I wouldn't publicize the bill being handwritten on paper. That's quite illegal these days.

                We live around the corner and ate there a couple of months ago. Sounds like time hasn't changed the place. Not knowing what to expect, we asked for a menu. The waiter let us know that there was no menu and we were delighted to find that plate after plate of delectable Abruzzese specialties kept coming. We practically needed to be carried home, but it was worth it. Enjoy!
