If you go through Monterrey, good meals can be had at El Gran San Carlos - cabrtio, some Spanish will be helpful as you will be the only non-locals in the place. La Valencia and La Caterina are also excellent and fairly upscale. Also in Monterrey you can tour Cervecerria Moctezuma, tours in English or Spanish.
