My boyfriend and I will be visiting Paris for the first time this May. We will be staying in the 11th Arrondissement. Although we plan on having a few nice meals, the majority will be budget, but I'd still like to eat very well. Please share with me if you have names of cafes, bistros, open markets, candy and pastry shops, etc., in the 11th. Also, any general observations and suggestions about that area would be really appreciated!
Thanks!

I checked my restaurant list and have only one restaurant listed for the 11th. We've never been but it was recommended to me. The name is Au Camelot on the rue Amelot. You need reservations and they don't take credit cards. I don't think, despite 8 trips to Paris, that we have been to the 11th so I can't provide any insight.

Thanks for the suggestion. I was getting a little worried that no one was responding...that maybe it's the red light district or something. haha.

The 11th is Oberkampf and parts of Belleville (Arab-Chinese-Magrebi, whew, everybody is there!), one of the recent cooler "newish" neighborhoods on the right, where all the action seems to be these days. I wrote up my recent trip back in July but here goes:
Rue Oberkampf has a bunch of happening bar/restaurants
(Le charbon, Le Mecano, etc).
In Belleville I've eaten @ le Boulangerie Bistro @ 15 rue des Manoyaux. A nice little corner bistro on a crooked side street, lunch is very reasonable, tasty, laid back. Metro Menilmontant.

You are also right by Canal St Martin, a little stretch that's a gem just up from Place Republique. This whole area is my fave in Paris these days, and I've been going to Paris about once a year for the past 17 years. Along St Martin, there are a number of wine bars, bars, and local places to eat. Nothing too earth shattering by the way of food, just decent neigborhood places.
Also, Le Dogan African @ 30 rue Rene Boulanger. Chez prune, bar/restaurant @ 71 Quai Valmy.

Enjoy

I just returned from there yesterday. Not a bad area of town, but here are two tips: avoid Le Villaret. Expensive and not great food AT ALL! plus the service was indifferent at best. For the same price (about 50 euro pp),go to Les Ormes in the 7th.Elegant, wonderful food, and attentive service by the owner. Also, the best 'marche bio' in Paris takes place on the blvd. Richard Lenoir on Sunday. Absolutely fabulous-cheeses,fruits and veg., flowers, real Parisians- a must visit. Go there hungry-you won't be disappointed...

The link below will lead you to a guide of neighborhood restaurants. Of those listed, I have heard many good things about La Griaude from my friends there. But the others look inviting, no?

I lived in the 11th for a long time. It is one of the best parts of Paris for food. I agree with one of the follow-ups: avoid Le Villaret. But you MUST go to Astier, in the northern part of the 11th, rue Jean-Pierre Timbaud. A four course meal, including the biggest cheese plate I've ever experienced (usually a large two-tiered basket). And the food is of the highest quality -- my best friend from Paris now regularly takes his mother there when she visits from Marseille, on my recommendation.
