We are going to be in Madrid for three days in Mid-March and have never been to Spain before. We have been reading about all the Tapas bars and are overwhelmed by the number of places. I would appreciate advice on the best to go to for an authentic experience. Also would appreciate restaurant advice for traditional cuisine. Whatever is the Spanish equivalent of a bistro would be my preferred restaurant style--not too formal. We are staying at The Palace Hotel so recommendations in that area would be great. Thanks for your help!

If memory serves me correct, right behind the Palace is a good street filled w/tapa places. Jesus Y C/duque de Medinacelli. For a good trad dinner, try the many places in Barrio Retiro, just across the Retiro park. Not too many tourists, places such as casa Portal (asturiano food),La Castella, La Monteria,
O'Grelo for Gallego food on c/Menorca 37. In fact C/Menorca has 3-4 places of note. Also check out the Madrid newspaper el mundo, they have a food, arts section metropoli, that's trustworthy for reviews. Use google to translate if needed. I'm off to Madrid for Presidents day
