I lived for a year next to campo dei fiori in rome 25 years ago
I was an architecture student then and I am returning with my family.
We are looking for one week rental near the campo and plan on eating at pierluigi and filete de bacala. Pizza bianca with coffee in the compo and at some point during the day granita de caffe con pana.
I am a little rusty and would love recommendations in this nieghborhood as well as central romm.
Thanks

La Carbonara is right inside the Campo Dei Fiori and strategically located for tourists. Also has a 2nd floor for indoor diners when it gets a little chilly.

We thought it would be another tourist rip-off spot and decided to give it a chance since it had a greater pasta selection than the other restaurants nearby, but everything was done very well and exceeded our expectations. They specialize in carbonara dishes, but their osso bucco was fantastic and was better than anything we had in Northern California. Also had the ravioli carbonara which I think had spinach and fresh riccotta cheese stuffed inside, very tasty. We also ordered a contorni of mixed vegetables which was pre-made but they took the time to warm it up and also garnish it a little further with olive oil. There was one more item but I can't remember what it was unfortunately (this was May of last year).

It's been a couple of years but Tazza d'Oro Coffee Bar (via degli Orfani, 84--at the corner
of via di Pastini just off Piazza della Rotonda, near the Pantheon) had the best granita con panna that we had. I'd be interested in your experience with pierluigi if you go again, since we'd like to return there, too, for our Sunday cena when we visit Rome in March.

We went to Tazza d'Oro twice during a visit to Rome last month. Sadly, the granita con panna does not stand up to cherished memory. Maybe its the effect of winter, but we agree that the effect was greasy and not the sharp contrast of strong sweet coffee ice and sweet cream we remembered. The cream seemed like that stabilized aerosol sweet cream we get here, not the smooth rich panna we remembered. Could the huge touristic volume have caused them to compromise their standards? (Note:they have a shop in the Rome airport now, if you miss them in Roma, but the water which supposedly makes the coffee in that part to Rome special wont be the same...) Didnt have time or stomach capacity to try, but think I would head a few blocks over to the St. Eustachio bar instead for my coffee fix next trip.

Another disappointment was the Forno in Campo di Fiori. the oil on the pizza bianco just didint taste right. Im hoping this was because I was a little sick that week, but as I said, it had an off flavor, not the good fresh olive oil flavor I expected. Still crowds in there scarfing it up, so hopefully it was just me...Its certainly a place I would go to immediately if I was staying in area of the Campo.

I posted a couple of reccs in the area earlier this month and will try to repost them for you shortly, along with a better Rome report.

is forno the bakery in the corner of the compo where they bake bread in there underware and stand in a pit in front of the ovens so they are at the right height. Also there was a place at the other corner of the
compo called the lateria that had fantastic granita de caffe con panna.
Another classic was filleti di baccala where they deep fried cod fish
which one would bite off each end and blow the steam out like a
cigar. This wonderfully simple restaurant with white table cloths
only served baccala, bread, butter and andcovies along with caraffs
of wine. It was a favorite after work stop on the way home. Are either of these places still open if not any recommendations on similar places...thanks

I just stayed in this neighborhood this weekend, but ate all of my big meals with friends elsewhere, so I can't help a lot with food.

You don't mention what type of hotel you are looking for... I stayed here:

http://www.hotelteatropace.com/

It's right off Piazza de Navona. It's a small hotel, recently renovated. There's no restaurant or public areas. The rooms range from simple singles to a nice suite on the top floor with a great terrace. We got a very good off-season rate through:

When I was looking around, I saw another some other places that rent apartments that looked promising:

I second the rec on Forno Campo de Fiori. However, I was there just around Christmastime and I found the pizza bianca and pizza rossa to be excellent. Also, nearby there is a great little restaurant called Hosteria del Pesce. Amazing fish, somewhat expensive, but you won't find better fish anywhere in Rome. I forget exactly where it is, but I would encourage you to look it up. Enjoy
