Puerto Rico, outside of San Juan--Fajardo, Guanica

I've got plenty of recommendations for dining in San Juan, but we'll be there only one night. The rest of the time we'll be touring the island.

Any recommendations for in and around Fajardo, and the Guanica and La Parguera areas? We'll be staying at the Fajardo Inn and Copamarina resort in Guanica.

Thanks!

  1. There is a small resturant east of the main resort area of La Parguera, across the street from a parking area that has the name of Azul (I think) in it. I've eaten there once and it was decent. If I remember, their hours are sporadic and they aren't open on Mondays and Tuesdays. Right next door is a small kioska that has a great cup of pulpo for $5. Alot of San Juaneros go to a resturant on the west side of town, I think it's called the DeadEnd but I can't vouch for it, as I haven't been there. The local market, next to the Post Office has great bread if you get there early enough. There was a resturant called the Blues Club next to it but it has changed hands and the locals I know haven't had much to say about it. There are a great number of resturants in the Joyuda area, on the water, between Mayaguez and Cabo Rojo, which may be a bit out of your way. I've eaten at several but never paid attention to names. It's great just to sightsee and pick one that piques your interest.

The Puerto Rican Tourism Company has designated around 30 "typical" (i.e. traditional island food) restaurants around the island as "mesones gastronomicos" (which doesn't translate very well). Anyway, they're a very safe bet for good food, perhaps a bit less adventurous than something you might discover yourself and definately more expensive (although still very reasonable).

Thanks for the links and the tips, if I find anything of interest I will report for sure! Seems like there's not a lot of information on eateries outside of the major cities.
