My husband and I will be going to Bermuda in the spring. Our hotel plan is MAP. So we are interested in your favorite places for lunch (including pubs). Any suggestions would be most appreciated!

It's worth going to the Swizzle Inn to try the rum swizzles. The food is standard pub fare - fish sandwiches, burgers and the chili is made with chunks of beef rather than ground.

If you can get out to the Black Horse in St David's you'll get to eat where Bermudians do, the fish is freshly caught and the fish sandwiches are terrific. If you're lucky shark hash may be available. Also nice to sit outside by the water.

In Hamilton there's the Hog Penny Pub on Burnaby Street and the Pickled Onion on Front Street, both are popular. Aggie's Cafe on Pitt's Bay Road is delightful - it's right on the water - but it's not a pub and doesn't serve alcohol.

If you let me know which parish your hotel is in I'm sure I can come up with some more suggestions.

I like going to the bakery and buying sandwiches and fruit cake and sitting next to the Yacht Club. Also Waterloo has GREAT afternoon tea. Pricey but well worth it. Upstairs Triminham's serves tea and light fare.

The Lighthouse Tea Room at Gibbs Lighthouse is great.

I know Swizzle Inn is famous and all but to me, it's a rip off. The little Dark Horse in St. David's is a gem.

It's the Black Horse, Coralee.

I'm not sure why you think Swizzle Inn is a rip off, it's been part of our culture for many, many years.

And which bakery are you referring to?

Thanks Athena for the corrections. I think my opinion on the Swizzle Inn is from my few visits where I paid a lot of money for a small rum swizzle. To me it is overpriced and overcrowded for my likes but I am glad it's part of your culture and you enjoy it..we all have an opinion. I used to go to BDA 3-4 times a year but now, not so often. I head back in April.

The bakery we used to go to was in Smiths called Cottage I think and another in Hamilton. Can you suggest what is latest and great?

Good thing you are here to correct..Peace..

Life is expensive in Bermuda, and so to us the Swizzle is at the cheap end things, relatively speaking.

The bakery in Smith's has long been replaced by a restaurant.

The new restaurant in Trimingham's makes their own muffins and other pastries, but I find them expensive. Rock Island Coffee on Reid Street roasts and grinds excellent coffee and at times has excellent home-made scones and other baked goods. It seems to depend on whether the person who makes them feels like baking or not.

You'll probably go out to Dockyard, and if you happen to be there at lunch Beethoven's is the only place I'd recommend. The dim and cavernous Frog and Onion has pretty awful food.

Pompano is pretty far west, you could try the Lighthouse Tea Room as someone else suggested, or if you like the pub atmosphere there's Henry VIIIs near Gibbs Hill lighthouse.

If you're in Hamilton, the Lemon Tree Cafe on Queen Street has wonderful freshly made food, the chef makes the bread and brioche. You can sit outside in the back which is Par-la-Ville Park.

Ascot's in the Royal Palms hotel (once a large old home) on Rosemont Avenue is really lovely and comfortable with good food.

Portofino on Bermudiana Road is a jolly Itlaian restaurant that's really popular with locals.

The Fairmont Hamilton Princess lays on a spectacular afternoon tea.

The restaurants in St George's are pretty dismal food-wise, but it's fun to hang out on the verandah above the square at Freddies and eat fish and chips. The White Horse across the square has a verandah right on the water.

If you want to put together a picnic, go to Miles Market on Pitts Bay Road.

Let me know if you have any more questions :)

I will be staying at the Salt Kettle House in Paget this July. Can you make any recommendations for a 60th birthday dinner for 2..we are very near the ferry to Hamilton so anywhere on the island would be great.

Thanks
