de las lilas is considered by some to be the best steakhouse in the world. I heard the Clintons recently visited the place, if that has anything to do with it. You should definitely go. Another legendary steakhouse is La Cabana wich reopened recently. During 1936 - 96 people like Maria Callas, deGaulle, Sophia Loren etc dined here. Upmarket & luxurious. Neighbouring to las Lilas is the more rustic and familiar La Caballeriza. Also for more urban, trendy style, check Central.

I have found that Cabana Las Lilas is a bit over-rated as it is somewhat inconsistent. My personal favorite (and you won't find any tourists there) is La Brigada in San Telmo. You won't find better beef anywhere (they don't give you a knife unless you ask for one). You are made to feel at home and they also have a very good wine list. Sorry, I don't have the address.

Ate at Cabana de las lilas on 9/21/04 and the service and food were great. Huge portions! We order the sweetbreads and the servings are 2X of US Standard. Must order the Bistec de chorizo, a baby cow that is approximately 15-16 months old. Also, try early and often the malbecs. Also, really yummy apps with different type of cheese breads.

On 9/23/04, we went to La Cabana and were blown away by the quality of meat and service. Ordered the 1,000 gram baby steak with potato pop-overs. The meat is to die for and better in quality than las lilas (although my companions like the chimuchurri sauce better at las lilas). We told the attentive staff that we were celebrating my wife's birthday and they gave us complimentary sparkling wine and even took the label off the wine we ordered so that we could remember the special occasion (for vino, order dona paula malbec, matices de abril). If you want a first rate experience, definitely head out to La Cabana. Also, they serve food from 9am until close, ask for Maria, she is first rate!

During a visit to BA a few months ago, we ate at Cabana de las Lilas, La Cabana, and el Mirasol (Recoleta). They all seemed fine to me. Your opinion of each will probably vary according to what you happen to order. We happened to eat in each with other people we like, so we were inclined to enjoy ourselves. The locals who took us to el Mirasol swear by it over all others, but there was one pork dish they especially like there and claim is superior in quality. My own favorite meal was at la Cabana (some kind of beef, I no longer remember exactly which cut, with a bit of a sauce,) but we ate well at all three. The ambiences vary slightly, and one or another might be more handily located for you, but you probably can't go wrong at any of them. And don't overlook their side dish salads -- I thought there were some very interesting and tasty ones. It is safe to eat them in Argentina.
