Also centrally located, and good for bavarian fare and for people watching/ a scene etc. as well as GREAT beer:

Andechser am Dom (on an alley between the Frauen Kirche and the Rathaus), so VERY central. They have a heated patio that is a great hangout even if you don't want to eat there. The food is good, bavarian bierstub stuff, but the beer is the best German beer I've ever had that wasn't Weissbier (Weisses Brauhaus for Schneider Weisse is our favorite for that). But the scene at Anderscher am Dom has been for us unparalleled (at least for our taste) with everyone quite friendly.

This may get pushed aside as touristy, but we have never had a bad serving of Haxen @ Haxenbauer. Walk towards the Victualan Market with the Rathaus on your left. Just after you leave the square, turn left onto the first side street. A few blocks down is the restaurant, with big glass windows in front where you can see all the Haxn roasting away. We also like the black farmers bread and radishes they serve.

We also love Haxnbauer, too & one late night there, we were the only tourists I spotted. I like the room furthest from MArienplatz - entered around the corner from the roasters best...

Dallmayer's is also wonderful for a light snack (especially if it's champagne & oysters!) & the Viktualienmarkt is one of my favorite places in the world.

And they seem to appreciate that, don't they? People always complain about travelling in Germany, but I speak enough German to get around (esp. when it comes to food & drink!) & am always treated very nicely.

I travel in Germany about 10 or 15 days a year on business and have never found language to be a problem. Many Germans speak a little English-it used to be a requirement as a second language starting in elementary school. With annual 2,000 km driving trips in Germany alone I would suggest that I have found this to be the friendliest and most outgoing of all the countries in Europe. I would also suggest that there are several restaurants in the Black Forest that are superb. The three star Schwarzwaldstube may not only be the country's best but also one of the world's best. Both this and Bareiss (a superb country hotel by the way that is reasonably priced for this level of quality!) are more than worth the approximate 250 km drive from Munich. They are in, arguably, the most beautiful part of Germany's Black Forest, Baiersbronn which also has it own website in English, www.baiersbronn.de (just click on the English flag).
http://www.relaischateaux.com/site/us/rc_schwarzwaldstube.html is the Relais website for Schwarzwaldstube.

Yes - I went to Germany not expecting much and love it - we've been there 3 times in as many years and are going back in a month. My "food german" is getting quite good, and I've always met kind, friendly people.

Have also (to be on topic) eaten some great food in the tiny village of Hinterzarten, in the Black Forest, at the Park Hotel Adler. And, a hop from Munich, at a few small local places in Hallein, just 5 miles outside of Salzburg.
