White truffle dinner

I dropped in to Palio d'Asti (Sacramento St., SF) this afternoon to see what their plans were for white truffle dinners this fall. I was told that the owner had just come back from Alba with no truffles. Due to the very hot summer weather, the quality/quantity of the truffle harvest was poor and the prices for what was available were very high. They are not planning to due any truffle dinners this season.

French Laundry has a billiard-ball sized white truffle that is magnificent.

White truffles are being served at Delfina for 1 more night I believe. We had tajarin in cream and parmasian with white truffles--a great way to get a load of truffle flavor without being overpowered by other tastes. However, the truffled rice pudding for desert was virtually all truffle. The first bite, an intense mixture of pungency and sweetness almost knocked me off my seat, while the remaining bites kept the flavor going pleasantly until sated.

No white truffle dinner at Acquerello this year. Like the Cubs, you'll have to wait until next year. ;)

That's too bad. We made reservations for Oliveto's white truffle dinners and their website states that for the same reason they will be subbing black truffles for some dishes and perhaps highlighting wild mushrooms as well.

I don't mean to knock Oliveto in any way, but credit to Gianni Fasi of Palio for deciding not to do it at all if he couldn't do it the way he wanted to.

My experience at Oliveto's truffle dinner last year was entirely sub-par, so I certainly wouldn't go if it was going to sub black truffles in some dishes.
