You MUST try Martin Wishart. Absolutely wonderful. I didn't know before we ate there that it's Michelin one-star so I was astonished by the meal. Small menu - only a few starters, main courses and desserts (four or five selections for each). You'll need to book ASAP because it's small. Although I heard they were trying to expand.
Also, Valvona and Crolla (or something like that) for lunch - it's a fantastic food store and in the back is a restaurant with very good food. You might have to line up - they don't take bookings. And they sometimes run out of food.
If you like cookbooks, head to a great bookstore called something like the Cooks Bookstore (not sure of the name though). The owner is Clarissa Dickson Wright of Two Fat Ladies cooking show. She was there when I walked in but I was too busy looking at the merchandise to notice the proprieter. My boyfriend noticed her though - they knew each other from when she was a barrister. She's the one who got us into Martin Wishart (it was fully booked), for which I am extremely grateful.
Oh, and try haggis anywhere!! sounds kind of disgusting but it's really good stuff!

The June 30, 2002 issue of Wine Spectator magazine had a couple of articles on visiting Edinburgh. Go to www.winespectator.com
You can either search thru the archive of their travel articles or just do a search for "Edinburgh" to find these articles.
I think WS generally does a pretty good job with articles of this type.

I second the recommendation of Valvona & Crolla, a terrific Italian deli that serves lunch. You might also try the Mussel Inn (Rose Street) for a casual seafood meal and Cafe D.O.C. (Thistle Street) for pretty good Italian dinner.

Hi Alex.
There are some fantastic bars/restaurants here but the best places are well kept secrets. If you are looking for a true exclusive qality dining experience I recomend the Tor Maukin of Fife. Contact me if you're interested in details of the location. But shh! don't tell anyone I told you.
