Looking for advice on a compromise between a sushi bar and top price Japanese. Ajimura used to be excellent value but haven't been there for years, any up to date review appreciated. Have seen small Japanese restaurant in Swallow St nr Piccadilly anyone tell me it's name and price range/review? Any other suggestions? Thanks.

If I am correct, Ajimura used to be in Shelton St in Covent Garden .. its now called Tsukuba. It does not attract huge volumes of people, nor are the furnishings topp class BUT we have always enjoyed great sushi at reasonable prices !

Thanks Dynamo, you are right about the location.

Discovered the name change after I posted the question, it always used to have a good selection of dishes reasonably priced, but years since I've been there.

Think we'll give it a try short of any other hot suggestions from chowhound community.

Ikkyu on Tottenham Court Road is good for Japanese generally. Sashimi is quite good. Sushi is less good as their rice is a bit too wet, but if you want a well rounded meal of other tasty dishes at a very reasonable price I recommend it. Decor is shockingly shabby, but that is part of the charm.

Late reply, but I suppose people keep referring to these things.

Place on Swallow St (or thereabouts) may have been Yoshino. Extremely good and reasonably priced. Decor is (predictably) a bit clinical but pleasant, certainly classier than the prices would suggest. Allegedy owned by a Japanese fishmonger, though this may be made-up. Possibly best thing is: home-made tofu. Had never understood how such a vile substance could be a staple food until I ate this. Boxed meals are actually good here, rather than filler for cheapskates.

Otherwise (though not sushi) Abeno, also recommended below, is excellent though probably couldn't visit too often. Interesting off-the-beaten-track starters and very pleasant staff.
