2) The "dildeaux" might be called "mushrooms" by the bakery, but "Chowfun" saw them for what they really are. Besides the appearance, they are incredibly delicious, even after sitting for several hours. I had taken my share home with me and didn't eat it until after midnight. The cream puff pastry was in great shape, the caramel crackle was snappy, and the filling was deluxe. A conversation starter and a first class dessert all round.

Gary...
As to the "dildeaux" the original Italian help would giggle at this old name for them, the Hispanic women just call them mushrooms.... they are a tube shape (maybe 6 or seven inches long), filled with chocolate-rum cream (which they use for some of their other goodies) capped with a "mushroom" head thingy, and the whole glazed with a crackly clear sugar glaze. Some people may be too shy and need to consume this in private!
I hope you make it to the next picnic! See what you're missing!!!

At this point, the tail is definitely wagging the dog. I must confess: it's no longer a web site whose denizens hold a picnic. It's a picnic with a subsidiary web site.

You guys are amazing, in terms of creativity, organization, artwork, and everything else. Sure wish I lived out there so I could come lurk at these things!

Thanks for the kind words, Jim. I hope you'll be able to join us one of these days. Can't wait until we can show you the photos of Gordon Wing's kitty litter cake complete with pooper scooper!

Everyone involved works hard to make it a great day. But none more than Rochelle "Pssst" and Michael Alderete who put in a lot of long hours. Rochelle's dedication is even more amazing than meets the eye - she had to leave early for another commitment and had but a half-hour to enjoy the first buffet table of picnic delights. To thank her for her hard work and sacrifice and try to make up for what she missed, I propose that the picnic attendees pledge to make a batch of their dish and deliver it to her in San Francisco. Shoot me an email to sign up for "Feeding Rochelle and Michael" and I'll compile the list for her.
