Although I have not been in a while, I have always been fond of Alfreds on New Oxford St.

You are also not a million miles from Lambs conduit St and could get into Cigala which is excellent

Thanks, I've been to Cigala so wanted to try something new. Will be in the Lambs Conduit area though so any others around there would be great.

Talking of Lamb's Conduit Street, there's a new "gastro-pub" opened called the Perserverence (sp?) on the corner with Great Ormond Street where the Finnigans Wake pub used to be. I've only poked my nose in and haven't eaten there but it's had rave reviews although the dining room is quite small so I guess you might need to book.

For more functional stuff, there's a servicabe thai place called the City Thai tucked away on New North Street (I think!) off Theobalds Road. Also there's a reasonable chinese on Millman Street whose name I forget - nothing spectacular mind.

There's a fish & chip restaurant (North Sea Chip Shop, sit down as well as take away) on Leigh Street which my memory thinks was quite decent.

On Marchmont Street there's a couple of places of unmemorable quality although it's a while since I've eaten that way so they may be much improved by now......or not!

Hope this helps if I think of anything else I'll post again.

Having been to the Perseverance a number of times, I highly recommend the food. It is one of the better gastro pubs I have been to. The beer selection is pretty much crap (unless you are a big fan of the standard lagers, which they mix up with the dubious addition of Miller Genuine Draft, havent really looked over the wine selection).

If you want true standard pub food, a better selection of bitters, ales, and scotches, try the Lamb down the street (a Young's pub, if I remember correctly). I'm a big fan, but have to concede the food at the Perseverance is much better.

If you want a replacement for your lost italian, and you are willing to walk a bit, you should check out Sardo's which has its own thread below. Its right off Tottenham Court Road, closer to Warren Street tube, then the Tottenham Court Road tube. The walk is worth it. But then of course, by the time you are over in that area, a whole new world of possibilities has been born.

I have to agree about the Lamb, a very fine pub with much better beers than The Perserverence although like you say, the foods is not up too much.

When I eventually get around to eating at the Perserverence I'll be whetting my appetite at the Lamb with a pint or two first.
