Just returned from a week in Fuengirola. The weather was glorious - consistently in the 80s during the day but not too hot at night and I ate well too.

A lot of the everyday eating on the coast can tend to the 'international' variety but you can avoid this by keeping it simple. I had gazpachos, barbequeued and grilled fish, Cigalas, Suckling Pig, Lechal Lamb, Pata Negra jamon washed down with lashings of Manzanilla, Marques de Riscal and Carlos I. This all comes at a very reasonable price - we were paying max about £25 a head for 3 couses including aperitifs, liqueurs and coffee.

My suitcase on return was packed with more of the Pata Negra jamon, Turron and a Spanish Brandy I haven’t tried before - Gran Duque de Alba. A trip to the gym is on the cards.

It is surprising what can be found in an area that could be perceived as a wasteland. I found myself in Torremolinos some years ago and in the backstreets was recommended a small but flamboyant little place called La Menta - I remember the jamon and brains on toast well. No idea whether it is still going.

Another great dish from round there is the Dorade baked in a hard crust of salt - I believe Mr J Oliver has been messing about with a similar dish, but I am convinced it only tastes right out of doors, next to the sea.

I had a pretty good Moroccan meal in Torremolinos a decade ago but didn't venture there this time. Next time if I can raise myself from my lounger I will go to Sanlucar de Barrameda where the shellfish is supposed to be excellent.

Spot on about having the right setting though luckily my mind was untrammelled by the cheeky chappy's fisog.
