<content>There was a bit of a chowhound get together tonight and before I get those few hours sleep before my gymnastic activities in the morning I thought it was worth a post

Myself and that traitor to the chowhound cause ( that'll be Andy Lynes then ) met up for a couple of superaltive martini's at The Lanesborough ( as mixed by the estimable Salvatore Calabrese- without doubt the best "mixologist" on earth ) ice cold and as dry as a queen at a bitching party

We then went on to Moshen, an Iranian kebab joint in ( shock horror!!!) West London. There magnolia and Howler awaited. Her with superb bottles of a chilean Gerwertz and him with his low principles and shoddy ideals but a terrific knowledge of the menu which none of us were allowed to see

A few starter salads of Baba Ganoush and Humous were excellent and the mains of assorted kebaba were amongst the best we have ever tried. Hurrah for West London, how could any one of doubted it.

Finally a pint of the black stuff and a badly kept cigar capped off a perfect evening which, while not of the scale of our shallow west coast bretheren, was by far its superior in roasted flesh

On to the next one in a few ( post Frankfurt book fair) weeks at the Viet Ho Cafe on KIngsland High road. ALl interested parties please e-mail as above

<content>Yes, the food was fab - wish you were there...

I didn't partake in the post-prandial pint &amp; stogie, but I can attest to the fab food and lively conversation. Simon and Howler proposed an interesting wager - which should move to 'not about food' if anyone's interested..."which nation boasts more nationalities - US or UK?"

<content>Glad you all enjoyed yourselves. My interest has been piqued by the mention of the Gewurztraminer. I am always keen to find a good bottle. Magnolia, could you provide details?

<content>Happy to. I'm always in search of a good wine to have with 'spicy' and 'highly spiced' food. Shiraz is a usually good bet but I've been looking for a refreshing white that doesn't end up tasting like water, and I think I've stumbled on a winner.

If you can believe it, it's from Concha y Toro (Chilean) and is called "Trio". It comes in a frosted bottle. I got it at Oddbins for &#163;6.99 and I have bought up the stock at Oddbins on West End Lane NW6 but I'm sure it is available at fine stores near you!

<content>Many thanks. I am well served by Oddbins in my area. For the more spicy foods I have always tended to New World Sauvignon Blanc but I am sure you have the bases covered there.

<content>Can't say about their fish selections - I didn't really look for that; but I would say OK for standard vegetarians (though possibly not vegan? I've no idea) - they have lots of breads, dips/chesses/yoghurt type dishes, eggplant, rice, fatoush-esque salads... </content>

<content>I have had hummus with freshly baked bread at a number of Persian restaurants recently. For that combination Alounak (Russell Rd off Holland Rd) pips Mohsen because the hummus is better. Yaz (Hammersmith Rd) would be third. Potagh (Crawford St off Edgware Road) had bitter bread and bitter hummus (over-baked sesame seeds). Apadana (Ken. High St.)'s bread was OK but they got the hummus out of a container which looked like a supermarket purchase.</content>
